Concept Mapping

Through the Concept Mapping Assignment I learned how to make an efficient, informative concept map. I have created concept maps before, but never created maps that had any depth to them. I learned how to create text notes that expanded further on specific topics and sub-topics. This was also the first time I have created hyperlinks on a concept map, and I believe it is a great way to provide multiple means of representation for topics and subtopics. A problem I encountered during this assignment was making sure every point was linked properly. This problem was solved by simply moving around different items until everything fit perfectly.
I am excited to one day integrate the use of concept maps into teaching in my future classroom. This will be a great visual to benefit my students so they can better understand how different ideas are related to each other. Concept maps will also be a great way for my students to engage in the lessons and improve their learning by organizing their thoughts and ideas on paper. It would also be a great idea to have my students create occasional concepts maps instead of regular homework. The students will be able to thoroughly illustrate their knowledge of a subject while emphasizing what they already know. During this assignment, I met the NETS-T Standard 1 because I used technology to advance my learning, used creative thinking and ingenuity, and used the concept map to explain and demonstrate my thinking and creative ideas.

Introduction

My name is Samantha McDaniel. I am from Mobile, AL., but currently reside in Petal, MS. I am an Elementary Education major at the University of Southern Mississippi and will be student teaching in the Fall of 2013. I am doing this portfolio to reflect on new ideas and concepts I will learn from IT 365 and to link artifacts so that others will be able to see  my work over the duration of this course. This portfolio will also demonstrate and meet the requirements of the NETS-T standards.
